Science Introduction

The Science Curriculum area comprises a suite of 6 laboratories. All laboratories are extremely well equipped, allowing students to enjoy working both in small groups and individually, to develop their investigative skills. Such skills are vital to complement and underpin the deeper scientific knowledge and understanding which develops with maturity.   The science curriculum aims to encourage students to discover the excitement and relevance of science, not only by working within the college laboratory, but also within their own lives and homes.

The science curriculum has a well stocked resource area in addition to the science section of the college library; all students in Years 10 & 11 are provided with revision guides to encourage and support home study. Science is put into context in a variety of ways including field trips, visits to scientific lectures, competition entries, industrial visits and visiting speakers and enrichment days.

All students in Year 10 and 11 study for a GCSE in Science.   Students then have the opportunity to study a second science as an option in order to provide an excellent foundation for study post 16.  Support lessons are provided in preparation for public examinations to assist students in revision and coursework.

Key Stage 4 students study the new Twenty First Century Science GCSEs.

From 2008, Key Stage 3 students will follow the new National Curriculum for science .
