In Key Stage 3, all students at Regents Park Community College get the opportunity to investigate the six major world religions – Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Sikhism and Hinduism. In addition to this, students explore some of the biggest questions all human beings have to consider eg. the existence of God and Life after Death.
In Year 8 students get to visit a variety of places of worship around Southampton as part of their Deep Learning Day programme. Another popular element of the course is our research into responses to the Holocaust, and in particular the motivation of those who helped Anne Frank.
Students now start the Short Course Religious GCSE in Year 9 and runs over two years. We follow the WJEC syllabus which gives us the opportunity to investigate a whole range of issues including Relationships, Inequalities and Injustice, Life after Death, Identity and Belonging, and Saving the Planet. Students are encouraged to develop their own responses to these themes as well extending their knowledge and understanding of the beliefs of different religions regarding these topics.
Students may also choose the Long Course Religious GCSE option which is completed over one year in either Year 10 or Year 11. This OCR course allows for an in depth study of Christianity and Islam, including essential beliefs, rites of passage, places of worship, Holy Books and pilgrimage.
Whether in Year 7 or Year 11, Religious Education at Regents Park Community College seeks to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to function effectively in the multi-faith, multi-cultural society of the 21st Century.
